Omar Khayyám viveu na Pérsia do séc. XII, é-lhe atribuída a introdução do x na matemática, essa variável que distribui o terror em milhões de alunos por este mundo. Ainda assim a sua fama como poeta é bem maior que a de astrónomo e matemático, fama essa concedida apenas à século e meio depois da tradução de Rubáiyát  por Edward FitzGerald, tornando o livro num "Harry Potter" da época vitoriana.

The Moving Finger writes: and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
